Tom Curran Studio

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and began my artistic education at what was then called the Society for the Arts and Crafts in Detroit, Michigan.  It is now called the Center for Creative Studies.  It was a wonderful place to begin.  I started as a sculpture major.  Unfortunately, after three years money became an issue and I dropped out.  But I never lost my interest in the arts.  I married the lovely Jacqueline and we have two children and one grandson.  I joined the military, made it a career and traveled the world.  (the best mistake I ever made) When I retired, I found out that I had GI Bill benefits, so I decided to go back to school.  I spent four more years at Georgia Southern University/Armstrong Atlantic State University and received my BFA in 2020.  The work you see here is all derived from my time at Armstrong.  I learned to paint in oils on canvas and so far, I haven’t seen any need to explore acrylics.  Besides that, I don’t think I’ve mastered oils so steady on.  I’m not sure why landscapes have been my focus.  I’ve done a portrait or two pretty successfully but clouds and seas, trees and rivers have gotten into my head.  I generally have an image in my head as a starting point and what I find so intriguing is how a work grows seemingly of its own accord.  Small things, different strokes provide direction and make a painting come alive. (at least for me).  I’ve received a few awards and that is certainly gratifying but I truly believe that these exercises in medium and mind are not part of any competition.  Every artist works to satisfy an itch.  These pieces are places where I scratched. Most of my work is on display at Cedar House Gallery in Savannah.
